The Douro is a region full of history.

Travel back in time in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, where at the Côa Museum and the Prehistoric Rock Art Sites in the Côa Valley, you can see replicas of original Paleolithic rock engravings, that are over 20 thousand years old.

In the historical city of Lamego, a visit to the Sé Cathedral and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a must. The gothic Sé cathedral dating from 1129 is located in the city centre, whilst at the top of the Santo Estevão hill, The Sanctuary forms an integral part of the city’s panorama, linked to the city by a stunning staircase.

In Régua, one of its most iconic buildings, ‘Company House’, today houses the Douro Museum. This is a must stop on a welcome tour of the Douro Valley due to its extensive information about the Douro winemaking region, its history, culture and identity.

Viewpoints are also an integral part of Douro history, as from these you can see the scenic features that are so characteristic of the region.
