The Douro Valley is a region rich in natural beauty and history. The wine estates surrounded by their terraces rise up from the river in a majestic landscape of great beauty.
During a visit to the Douro Valley you will have an opportunity to enjoy the wine, local craftmanship, such as traditional baskets, tapestry, black ceramic bowls, and local cooking.
Like many other wine areas the Douro Region has its own ‘Port Wine Route’ which is well signed along the roads. The region is divided into three subregions, each with its own microclimate. Throughout the region there is always a huge climatic difference between the hot dry summers and the cold wet winters. The Douro wine region has a total area of roughly 250.000ha, between the west and eastern boundaries with 40.000ha under vine.
This region is almost certainly the oldest officially demarcated region for wines in the world. It is easy to appreciate in this unforgettable landscape of vineyards and estates, man’s influence over nature through the centuries.
