São João da Pesqueira

In the heart of the Douro

São João da Pesqueira is a Portuguese town in the district of Viseu, a sub-region of the Douro with around 2200 inhabitants and situated at an altitude of 850m.

São João da Pesqueira is located 20 km from Pinhão (around 30 minutes by car), and bestows the most incredible views over the extensive vineyards of the Douro Valley.

What to visit?

The town was named after its stream which also had an abundant supply of fish; a paradise for fishermen and so it was called “pesqueira” (Saint John of the Fishermen).

  • Eduardo Tavares Museum

    The Eduardo Tavares Museum was inaugurated in 2003, and showcases a large part of this internationally recognised Portuguese sculptor’s work.

    The museum also houses an impressive archaeological collection originating from several different places in the county, with pieces chronologically dated from 6000 years ago. Within the same museum space you can also find the tourism office and a library related to the Douro region.

  • Misericórdia Chapel

    The Misericórdia Chapel belonged to the D. Luís Alvares de Távora family, who later donated it to the Parish Church.

    The Chapel’s front elevation displays Baroque tiles in two panels, representing scenes of Christ helping the Samaritan and Christ curing a sick person.
