Vila Nova de Foz Côa

One single municipality with two World Heritage sites

Vila Nova de Foz Côa is a city belonging to the district of Guarda, located in the Northern Region and Douro sub-region, and which is home to around 3100 people.

The distance between Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Pinhão is approximately 60 km, about an hour and 20 minute car journey.

What to visit?

The engraving art in Côa was awarded the National Monument category in 1997, followed by the World Heritage Site in 1998 by UNESCO. Find out more about these rock engravings dated from the Upper Palaeolithic.

  • Côa Museum

    Open since 2010, the Côa Museum aims to educate about the artistic heritage of the Côa Valley, through its replicas of the original rock engravings, interactive information and history spanning over 20 thousand years.

    This museum also offers tours with specialist guides to the original prehistoric rock engraving sites in the valley.

  • Prehistoric Rock Art Sites in the Côa Valley

    The archeological park of Vale do Côa (PAVC – Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa) offers guided tours in the park which are open to the general public, in open top all-terrain vehicles, to three of the main sites known for their paleolithic rock engravings: Canada do Inferno, Penascosa and Ribeira de Piscos.
